WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- On Saturday morning, hundreds of cars packed into the parking lot of Wauwatosa's City Hall for the 16th annual Tosa Green Summit.

The event aims to promote sustainability and eco-friendly lifestyles.

Attendees were able to bring papers and documents for shredding, old medicines, scrap metal, and other pieces of junk to get rid of all for free.

"Some of our regulars come through every year. People save up all year long to bring their shredding through, it's pretty great," said Taren Sartler Justus, the president of the Wauwatosa Crime Stoppers, which was accepting donations in the paper line. "We are really here as an offshoot to help the police department as a liaison to collect tips that come in anonymously and when they do lead to an arrest, we do pay a reward... it's a great fundraiser for us and community awareness, getting to meet the community folk and helping them get rid of those documents."

The yearly event is one that not only connects community but encourages people to go green.

"We are collecting food donations or money donations or even clothing or other small household good donations," said Nancy Beaumier, who has volunteered for the Tosa Cares Food Pantry for the last seven years. "We provide food to about 350 families every two months. We build community."

Next week, the Tosa Green Summit will hold another event but that one will focus on collecting hazardous waste at the Public Works Yard.
