MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Wednesday is National Senior Citizens Day, and one hometown nonprofit celebrated by continuing its efforts to feed the elderly.
Each month, thousands of low-income seniors receive a stock box of supplementary food.
They're filled with cereal, milk, cheese, meat, vegetables and more.
Hunger Task Force volunteers make pick-up easy for seniors who just have to drive up to get the boxes.
We spoke with one woman who says the boxes fill a nutritional gap she wouldn't be able to meet by herself.
"It saves me over $100 a month in groceries," said Joan Canfield. "They have broccoli here that they harvested today, and I like to steam it. I love fresh fruits and vegetables; I am very health-minded, and it makes a big difference in the Social Security budget."
To qualify for a stock box, seniors must be 60 years old or over and meet income requirements.
