'I feel really proud of what we do': Free clinic shares mission with Brewers player
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Brewers pitcher spent time off the mound to visit the largest free clinic in Wisconsin on Tuesday.
Julio Teherán stopped by Aurora Walker's Point Community Clinic, a free clinic that provides care for Milwaukee's growing Hispanic population and other underserved communities.
"As a representative of the Hispanic community, and the Brewers, I am very happy and honored to be here and get to share with them," Teherán said to CBS 58. "To come here and share with them, to bring them gifts on behalf of the Brewers is something very special."
The Colombian native gave out hats that will be a game day giveaway during next month's Cerveceros Night at American Family Field in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. He also presented the clinic with $2,500 to help them continue their work.
"We serve both the unserved and underserved. The majority of the population of our clinic patients is uninsured," Aurora Walker's Point Community Clinic Manager of Clinic Operations Chris Casselman said. "Our mission is to provide access to quality health care for populations who in other ways struggle to access health care."
In total, clinic staff speak 18 languages, meaning they can heal patients in their native tongue.
"It's an honor to be able to do that, to be able to bridge that gap for people, to help people understand what's being said, what's happening to them," said Aurora Walker's Point Community Clinic Administrative Assistant Alison Gima.
For Gima, talking about her passion for helping others with a Brewers player was unforgettable.
"I feel really proud of what we do, and I love being able to share that with anybody. It's fun to get someone visiting that might not have seen this place before and to show what wonderful things we've got going on in the community and in the city," she said.
The Brewers' Cerveceros Night is Sept. 15.
