MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The victim of an attack on Milwaukee's east side last month spoke to reporters for the first time on Wednesday.

Thirty-five-year-old Matt Carlin had a fractured jaw after 21-year-old Cole Slotke ripped off his shirt and punched him in the face around 9:30 p.m. on July 27. The attack was recorded on surveillance video outside Carlin's home near E. Brady Street and N. Arlington Place.

“Sleeping has been rough, taking in anything food-related has been a challenge. For the first couple days, my jaw was hanging off the side," Carlin said. "It's going to be a long road ahead of me."

“I don’t understand why anything like that would cross anybody’s mind," Carlin said as he recalled the incident to reporters on Wednesday.

Carlin shared photos of his jaw injuries, including the image below. Carlin said he still shakes when he leaves his home after the attack.

“It’s terrifying, it’s disconcerting, it’s awful," Carlin said. “It’s going to be a long road ahead of me.”

Carlin's wife, Kristel Sikora, had previously spoken to CBS 58 and shared her frustration with the Milwaukee Police Department for their investigation, stating it took too long for Slotke to get charges.

Slotke is charged with substantial battery and criminal damage to property. His first appearance in court is scheduled for Sept. 17.

Carlin says he wants the man who hurt him to be held accountable for his actions.

“We shouldn’t live in fear that some random, violent person is going to come and up-end your entire world," Carlin said.
