MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Voters can cast their absentee ballot in person starting on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at one of several early voting locations across Milwaukee.

Early voting kicks off with several major statewide races, including governor and U.S. Senate on the ballot.

Wisconsin voters can register to vote in person at their polling location before casting their ballot. If you need to update your address, you can do so at one of the early voting sites from Oct. 25 until Nov. 5 or on Election Day, Nov. 8.

If you registering to vote, you must provide documentation that process where you live in Wisconsin. Examples include a utility bill issued within the last 90 days, bank or credit card statement, current or valid driver's license or ID card, paycheck, or vehicle registration. A full list of acceptable documentation can be found here.

What do I need to bring?

You must have one of the following IDs to vote;

  • Wisconsin driver's license
  • Wisconsin ID card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

Even if your driver's license is revoked or suspended you can still use that as identification to vote. Also, an expired passport works as well.

If you need a voter ID card, the DVM issues those for free.

Voting by mail/absentee ballot

If you are not already registered, you will need to register to vote before an absentee ballot can be sent to you. A new voter registration application is required any time you move (even minor changes such as apartment units), change your name, or if you have not voted in the past four years.

Applications for absentee ballots must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Nov. 3. You can fill out an application to vote absentee here.

Absentee ballot return options

Absentee voters can only return their ballot by mail or at their local clerk's office after the State Supreme Court ruled drop boxes are illegal in Wisconsin. If you are unable to physically return your absentee ballot due to disability, there is an expectation for these individuals who can have someone else place their ballot in the mail for them.

Voters using USPS to return their ballot are recommended to give their ballot one week to be delivered to their local clerk's office. Election officials do not recommend placing ballots in the mail after Tuesday, Nov. 1.

You can also return your ballot in-person at the Milwaukee Election Commission before Oct. 25 or on Nov. 7-8. They are located on the 5th Floor of City Hall, 200 E Wells St, in Room 501.

Voters are able to return their ballot directly to the absentee processing center as well on Election Day, Nov. 8 located at Wisconsin Center District between 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Voters should drop off on the corner of Vel R. Phillips and Wisconsin Avenue.
