'It's sad, it's scary': Caledonia family escapes massive house fire and loses everything

CALEDONIA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A devastating house fire in Caledonia is leaving a family without a home with only days to the holidays.

"It's just such a tragic thing, like where do you go with your emotions," said Gigi Bohm, Brian's Bohm's stepmom. "It's sad, it's scary, it's what do you do next?"

Brian Bohm and his family escaped a massive house fire on Thursday morning, Dec. 12.

Bohm and his wife have three young children and are soon expecting a baby girl. Now, they've lost everything, leaving him and his family in shock.

"I'm just seeing it right now for the first moment and it's surprising," said Gigi Bohm. "It's still smoldering and I'm just thankful that everybody is okay and got out alive."

As the family copes with their loss, the community is helping them get back on their feet. In less than 24 hours a GoFundMe raised more than $30,000.

Bohms's employer, Kunes Buick GMC of Oak Creek, is also collecting donations. They've received truckloads of items for the family.

"It's pretty cold out right now," said Justin Douma, Bohms's co-worker. "So, just trying to get some clothes for him at least and do whatever we can to help him out and feel as little stress as possible."

Community members are showing up to help the family one donation at a time.

"You just never want someone to go through that, especially someone like that," said Douma. He's a very good leader for us here."
