JEFFERSON, Wis. (CBS 58) — Jefferson is beginning a new international partnership after officials formally established a sister-city relationship with Noda City, Japan, on Wednesday.

Officials from the two communities signed a memorandum of understanding, creating a partnership aimed at promoting educational, cultural and economic opportunities for years to come.

Jefferson Mayor Dale Oppermann said the relationship goes beyond economic development and provides an opportunity for residents in both communities to build lasting connections.

"This is more than just a business relationship, although it's a great business relationship," Oppermann said. "This is about culture and people."

The partnership comes just weeks after a new Kikkoman production facility opened in Jefferson.

Kikkoman was founded in Noda City, providing another connection between the Wisconsin community and its new sister city in Japan.
