MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center in Milwaukee will stop operating the Hy & Richard Smith JCC Water Park after Labor Day 2024. This decision follows the usual end-of-summer schedule but marks a significant change for the center.

The announcement was made in a message to members on Monday, July 1 in which the organization notes that the decision was driven by ongoing financial challenges and staffing shortages.

According to the statement, the water park has consistently operated at a significant deficit, and the necessary updates would require a large community investment.

The JCC Board of Directors and key staff analyzed the fiscal sustainability of the water park, leading to a unanimous decision to cease operations of the park, based on complete financial and engagement data collected from member surveys and other assessments.

While the water park will continue operations through Labor Day, preparations for its next chapter will begin immediately afterward. The JCC plans to explore various options for the space. A special celebration for members is scheduled at the water park on Sunday, Aug. 11.
