Judge Hannah Dugan trial day 2: Federal agents testify about personal interactions with Dugan in hallway
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Day two of Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan's federal trial was the most important so far, as several witnesses testified and the jury heard firsthand accounts of what happened.
A fellow circuit court judge spoke about what happened when Dugan went out to confront the federal agents.
Court adjourned a little early Tuesday, after lengthy testimony from nine witnesses. The most important testimony so far came in the early afternoon from fellow circuit court judge Kristela Cervera, who was in the hallway with Judge Dugan when she confronted the agents.
Cervera told the court, "Judges shouldn't be helping defendants evade arrest."
She said Dugan "seemed agitated," telling her, "ICE is here, we need to check a warrant."
When Cervera learned the next day about the Flores-Ruiz incident, she said, "I was mortified that some may think I was part of what happened."
When she next spoke with Dugan, the following Monday, she said Dugan told her she was in the doghouse with the chief judge, "something to the effect of, 'Because I tried to help that guy.'"
On cross examination, Defense Attorney Steven Biskupic peppered Cervera, confirming she has a sister who is a criminal defense attorney and that she texted that sister to say ICE was in the building in the event she had clients who could be impacted.
Biskupic also confirmed Judge Cervera's statement to the grand jury in this case did not mention that she had warned her sister.
More federal agents testified after her, covering familiar ground of the arrest operation and a sheriff's sergeant said he would have concerns if a criminal defendant was given access to the hallway Flores-Ruiz walked out of.
The last witness of the day was the victim witness advocate who worked with Eduardo Flores-Ruiz' victims.
She testified she would expect a case involving her victims to be called on the record. That did not happen after Judge Dugan directed federal agents away from her courtroom.
The trial resumes at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
The government says they'll "motor through" and expect to finish with their witnesses then.
It's still uncertain if Judge Dugan will testify in her own defense.
Attorney Justin Padway joined us Tuesday night to provide his insight on the case.
