Jury selected in trial for man charged with murder after stepson accidentally shoots mother
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The trial is underway for a man accused in connection to the murder of a 34-year-old woman.
Prosecutors say the woman's son fired a gun inside their house trying to stop his stepfather from hitting her.
Now, that stepfather- Ziare Dalton- is on trial for her death.
After hours of the prosecution and defense asking potential jurors a series of questions Tuesday, a jury was officially selected.
Court documents say it all started in April of last year at an apartment near 15th and Cherry. Investigators say 17-year-old Jaylen Gray tried to stop Dalton from hitting his mother, Amber Gray. In the struggle, Jaylen accidentally shot his mother, who later died from her injuries.
An 11-year-old was inside the home and told police there was "a lot of yelling, bad words, and things dropping" while Dalton was hitting their mom.
Police also reviewed a 911 call from that night. Amber Gray can be heard reporting the attack, and then about 10 gunshots ring out before the line goes dead.
Dalton was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds and now faces felony murder charges in connection to her death.
The trial is set to resume Wednesday morning when the prosecution lets the jury hear that 911 call and Jaylen Gray will take the stand.
