KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 33-year-old Kenosha man died Sunday night, Sept. 20, after a shooting inside Shenanigan's Bar near 52nd and 25th, and the man accused in the shooting was later shot by police officers as he fled the area, according to the Kenosha Police Department.

A childhood friend identified the victim to CBS 58 as Antero Medina, also known as Casper Medina.

Ashley Maravilla, who comforted Medina's brother outside the bar early Monday morning, Sept. 21, described Medina as a brother, a son, and a father who was well-known and well-liked. "He's one of those people that they can go anywhere that they welcome him in, very happy, very go lucky. He wasn't there for violence at all," Maravilla said. "He'd get off of work and come and have a drink and play darts."

"I just came to say my condolences to the family. I just don't think it's real," Maravilla said.

Police say officers responded to Shenanigan's around 8:30 p.m. and found Medina with gunshot wounds. He died from his injuries.

The suspect, a 45-year-old Milwaukee man, was identified by Kenosha police Monday as Adam Threlkeld.

Police say he fled the scene and fired at a responding officer as police searched the surrounding area, hitting the officer's squad car about a block from the bar.

Two officers returned fire, shooting Threlkeld, who was taken into custody and is said to be in stable condition at a hospital. No officers were significantly injured.

Maravilla said she was still trying to piece together what happened. "It was a shootout, so hopefully they will be getting justice for that."

A woman who lives just a block away from the bar tells CBS 58 the shootout ended right outside of her house.

"There were two shots, and then just a barrage of shots," said Stephanie Rediske.

She said when she heard the gunfire, she dropped to the floor of her bedroom.

"When I heard the cops yelling, 'we got him, we got him,' and I knew the gunfire was probably done, that was when I slowly got up," she explained. "I could see him. He was right outside my window."

Rediske said she had her window open and could clearly hear the man yelling at officers as he laid on the ground.

"They hit him in the ankle, and he was screaming, 'I just wanted to die, I just wanted to die,'" she recalled.

She called the situation chaotic, saying it made her both fearful and angry.

"I've kind of been desensitized to a lot of the things that happen around here, unfortunately, but this is the closest to home it's ever been," said Rediske. "The neighbor across the street from me has a little girl that she was shielding."

Shenanigan's shared the following statement on social media Monday:

The Kenosha Police Department says the officer-involved shooting is being independently investigated by the Kenosha Racine Area Investigative Team, with the Racine County Sheriff's Office as the lead agency, per standard protocol.

Medina's family tells CBS 58 they have established a GoFundMe to pay for the cost of his funeral. Click here to contribute.
