Kohl's to open in former downtown Boston Store location fall of 2023

 

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Since Boston Store left downtown Milwaukee a few years ago, the area has seen many changes. On Friday, July 15,  Kohl's announced it will add another place for people to shop. Kohl's plans to open a small-scale version of its department store on the first floor of the former Boston Store on Wisconsin Ave. 

It comes after Kohl's announced a couple months ago that it would open 100 small-format stores as part a new growth strategy.

"They all will have a smaller footprint than what we traditionally built, so in this space it's 40,000 square feet," said Kohl's CEO Michelle Gass. 

The store will have a Sephora, and Gass said it will have an urban, modern look and feel. To fit into the smaller space, the store will have a curated collection using data to determine what people in Milwaukee want and need.

Community leaders say this is part of a revival in downtown Milwaukee, with a booming Deer District and the new Third Street Market Hall — which is part of the larger HUB 640 building, the same building that houses the new Kohl's.  

"There's more work to come and more work to do in realizing the full, modern potential of Wisconsin Avenue," said Mayor Cavalier Johnson at the Kohl's announcement on Friday. "For example, the City of Milwaukee is finalizing the design for the Vel R Philips plaza that's going to be right across the street from here-- with a future street car extension." 

The building is still a bare-bones construction site right now, but Kohl's is planning for a grand opening by the fall of 2023. 

Inside, there will be an entrance that leads right into the Third Street Market Hall.
