LaFleur addresses Rodgers, Love at NFL's annual meeting
PHOENIX, Ariz. (CBS 58) -- The NFL's annual meeting continued in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday and for the second straight day, Aaron Rodgers was a topic of conversation for the Green Bay Packers.
The Packers are in the process of facilitating a trade for Rodgers to the New York Jets, but no deal has been agreed to yet.
"I've got nothing but love and appreciation for what Aaron has done for so many in our organization," Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said to reporters onsite at the NFL meetings in Phoenix. "Obviously, have experienced a lot of great times together, won a lot of football games together. Ultimately, didn't bring home a Super Bowl, which will always be disappointing."
LaFleur didn't want to expand much beyond his appreciation for his time with Rodgers after becoming the Packers head coach in 2019. But he did expand on who would take over for Rodgers under center, Jordan Love.
He wants tempered expectations for the Packers 2020 first round pick because he says it is unfair to assume he will step right in and be like the future Hall of Famer Rodgers.
Love has played in 10 games since being drafted in 2020, most of that in the end of game situations. But he has one start in his career, filling in for Rodgers when he was out with COVID-19. In a 13-7 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs, Love was 19-34 throwing for 190 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
His most significant playing time outside of that, was in relief of an injured Rodgers against the Philadelphia Eagles. He led two scoring drives going 6-9 for 113 yards and a touchdown in a 40-33 loss.
LaFleur told reporters in Phoenix, that the offseason program will be focused on easing Love into the starter role and expects to bring another team in for joint practices for the fourth time in his tenure.
