LAKE MILLS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Lake Mills Fire Department is mourning the loss of Chief Todd Yandre, who unexpectedly passed away on Feb. 15.

Initial reports indicate a cardiac event is the cause of his death in the line of duty.

"He was one of those people where the term 'servant' meant something to him. He was a public servant," retired Lake Mills Fire Department Lieutenant Jim Maurer said. "He ate, drank, and slept the fire service."

Chief Yandre served the Lake Mills Fire Department for over 41 years, moving up the ranks from volunteer firefighter to chief.

"It's hit many people very hard," Lake Mills City Council President Greg Waters said. "If you were to paint a perfect picture of Lake Mills, it would include Chief Yandre."

His death came as a shock to the community.

"Todd was in great physical shape, to all our knowledge. We all strived to be like him, to be that physically active and to be that strong."

To give the Lake Mills Fire Department, an all-volunteer team, time to grieve, other area departments are stepping up.

"It's tough on the whole community, but especially the firefighters," Waters said.

The city of Lake Mills says a visitation will be held at the Lake Mills Elementary School gymnasium from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25.

There will be another one this Sunday, Feb. 26 from noon-2 p.m. with a memorial service to follow.

Yandre's obituary says you can also attend virtually through this link.
