MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- There was a public show of support for Milwaukee police Thursday morning, Oct. 15, led by Tracey Dent from the Milwaukee Coalition Against Hate.
Thursday was declared the first annual Milwaukee Police Appreciation Day.
Several local leaders spoke, and Dent talked about the struggles police face during a year when the city is on a pace to set a record for homicides.
"This will be the worst year in Milwaukee history when it comes to violence," said Dent. "So it is time for the community and the police department to start working together."
"It does mean a lot that you would take the time and dedicate a day to law enforcement and our professionals," MPD Inspector Shunta Boston-Smith said.
As a gesture of support, sweet treats were dropped off for the police officers at District 1, including cupcakes with the MPD seal on the frosting.
