MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Today is National Voter Registration Day, meant to bring awareness to upcoming elections and the voting process. 

An event was held Tuesday morning at the Milwaukee County Courthouse, where people could get assistance with voting registration. 

The Milwaukee County elections director shared why it's helpful to register before heading to your polling place.

"We certainly want people to start thinking about their plan for Election Day, so registering in advance provides an opportunity to not have to wait in lines on Election Day," Elections Director Michelle Hawley said. "Your name should be in the poll book, so you can go right up with your photo ID and get your ballot and mark it on Election Day and be able to vote."

If you aren't registered or have election questions, there will be another event Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Milwaukee County Veterans Service Office in West Allis, one Thursday, Sept. 17 at the Marcia P. Coggs Health and Human Services Center in Milwaukee.

Both will take place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
