NOW: Local organization warning parents to be vigilant about vape devices

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Vaping devices can be hiding right under parents' and teachers' noses.

Your Choice to Live is a nonprofit drug and alcohol prevention education agency in Oconomowoc. They are now teaching parents and students across the state about the harmful effects of vaping.

They are also showing parents that vaping devices can be disguised as everyday items from flash drives and key fobs to even hidden in fidget spinners and watches.

Vaping devices can be illegally altered to contain more than nicotine and flavor.

They can be filled up with illegal drugs like the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department saw in a recent THC vape cartridge bust.

“They are very very common,” Ashleigh Nowakowski, Your Choice to Live Executive Director said. “They don’t smell, so I can go into the bathroom at school and I can use it. They are using it before wrestling practice, baseball practice…and the more that it’s easy to conceal the more they are going to use.”

By just looking at a vape device it can be hard to tell what is inside so Your Choice to Live is encouraging parents to be on alert and set consequences for vaping.

Your Choice to Live has an interactive online quiz where parents can learn more about where kids can be hiding drugs: www.wakeupcallroom.org
