Madison basketball team takes bus to Florida tournament after Southwest cancels flight

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Madison high school basketball team would not settle for being stranded at the airport amid thousands of flight delays and cancelations this past week.

Vel Phillips Memorial High School's boys' team was scheduled to play in a tournament in Florida, but when they reached Chicago's Midway Airport Monday, their Southwest Airlines flight was canceled minutes before takeoff.

After spending 10 hours at the airport, the team found a bus that would take them to Florida. So, they got on board for the drive, hoping they'd make the tournament in time.

"If I was to do it over again, I don't think I'd actually change anything, because I think I've gotten closer to a lot of teammates that I wasn't that close with, and I'm really excited to get out of the bus and start playing again," said Sam Mickelson, junior.

We're happy to report that Vel Phillips Memorial did make it in time for their first game in the tournament.
