Man charged in crash that killed beloved St. Francis teacher had 2 prior OWI convictions
MILWAUKEE COUNTY (CBS 58) -- A 27-year-old Oak Creek man has been charged in a drunk driving crash that left a mother of two dead.
The crash happened Friday, Dec. 6 near Lipton and Van Norman around 3 p.m.
Michelle Engman, 48, was leaving work and was just a few minutes into her commute when she was struck by a suspected drunk driver who blew a stop sign and t-boned her vehicle.
Engman died three days after the crash.
The driver who caused the crash stayed at the scene and was identified as Troy Vaillancourt.
Following the crash, Vaillancourt reportedly told police he just finished work when the crash occurred and stated, "I'm 90% sure I blew the stop sign then hit her." Vaillancourt then indicated he "probably was speeding."
According to a criminal complaint, an officer observed Vaillancourt to have glassy eyes and slurred speech. Field sobriety tests were performed after Vaillancourt said he drank the night before and continued drinking until about 4 a.m. Vaillancourt failed multiple tests, and a preliminary breath test registered a .169% blood alcohol content (BAC).
Vaillancourt was taken into custody.
This is not the first drunk driving offense for Vaillancourt. He has two prior OWI convictions from 2019 and currently is under a .02% blood alcohol restriction for the previous offenses.
Vaillancourt has been charged with one count of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle while having a prior intoxicant-related conviction.
He's due in court for an initial appearance Wednesday, Dec. 11.
Engman was a mother of two pre-teens and a wife of 25 years. She was a beloved teacher who taught throughout the St. Francis School Public District.
