Dozens of family members and friends of 35-year-old Cole Strohbusch filed inside the Jefferson County Courthouse Friday, Jan. 2, as Watertown police testified about what they saw the night Strohbusch was killed. It happened shortly before 1 a.m. on Dec. 21.
Police say 54-year-old Jeffrey Redecker was driving while intoxicated and hit Strohbusch with his truck.
In court Friday, an officer testified that witnesses on scene told police Strohbusch's body was dragged along the street under Redecker's car.
"The male was laying down on the street. He was breathing when we arrived, however I could see blood coming from his head," said Watertown Police Officer Benjamin Miller. "His right arm looked like it had been rubbed, like it had been dragged down the street."
Watertown police say video from the witness's phone shows the moment Strohbusch was hit.
"The video showed as it was turning left, it hit the victim, who was walking across the crosswalk, and the victim was wearing like a neon green construction jacket," said Benjamin Miller, Watertown Police Department. "It showed the truck actually striking the victim and the victim being dragged under the truck, and that's pretty much where it cut off."
Investigators used license plate readers to identify Redecker's car later that night.
"Along the front of the truck was like a lack or tinted bug guard and the impact with the victim had caused the driver's side portion of that bug guard to be broken," said Officer Miller.
When they arrived at Redecker's home, Officer Miller testified he conducted a preliminary breath test. Redecker's blood alcohol content was revealed to be a .121 more than three hours after the incident.
"I could smell the odor of the intoxicants coming from him and his responses were slow," Miller said.
Redecker had been previously convicted of an OWI in 2006. He currently faces three felony charges, including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
Redecker is being held on $500,000 cash bond. He is due back in court next month.
