Man who beat fellow inmate to death at Racine County Jail sentenced

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The man who fatally beat another inmate in the Racine County Jail was sentenced to at least 40 years in prison.

Davonte Carraway assaulted 35-year-old Joseph Lee inside the Racine County's Jail's day room last December.

Lee's family says Lee was placed upside down naked in a garbage can following the attack.

Lee was taken off life support in January.

In court on Friday, Feb. 13, Carraway said he blacked out during the incident and did not intend to kill Lee. He says he defended himself and takes accountability for his actions.

"I apologize that these people have to sit here and look at me and go off the picture that he painted me as a monster and I'm not. I messed up," Carraway said.

"You beat him to death and to claim you were defending yourself or to say this was fueled entirely by emotion? How can an individual who is knocked out, unconscious, lying on the floor seizing have any emotion when you continue to beat him and slam him into the ground and then pick up him and throw him into a trash can head first," said Racine County Circuit Court Judge Robert Repischakh.

On top of the sentencing, Carraway is still awaiting a jury trial on an attempted homicide charge.

That trial is scheduled to begin in May.
