Marquette and UW Badgers women's basketball teams call off upcoming games due to COVID-19 protocols

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The recent increase in COVID-19 cases nationally has caused many college sports teams to postpone or cancel scheduled games for the week. Now two of Wisconsin Women's College Basketball teams are part of that list.

The BIG EAST Conference announced Sunday, Dec. 26 that the Marquette at UConn women's basketball game, which was scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 29, has been canceled due to COVID issues within the Marquette program.

Under the BIG EAST's policy, a Conference game will be canceled in the event a school has fewer than seven scholarship players and one countable coach available for a game.  The BIG EAST Conference Office will attempt to reschedule the game in accordance with parameters approved by BIG EAST directors of athletics. If the rescheduling parameters can't be fulfilled, the canceled game will be designated as a "no contest."

The UW Badgers Women's Basketball team also called off their scheduled game against Purdue on Thursday, Dec. 30 at the Kohl Center.

According to a release from the organization, the decision was made by UW medical officials because of positive COVID-19 tests within the Badger program.

Information about how the game will be handled in relation to the Big Ten Conference's 2021-22 Forfeiture Policy will be announced in the coming days.
