MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) students are nearly a month into the new school year.

Now, one Marquette University student is making it her mission to help ensure they have all of the supplies and resources they need for success.

Indira Stefano is the community service co-chair for the American Student Dental Association, who also describes herself as being in "Grade 18" at Marquette's School of Dentistry.

She first got the idea for a supply drive last spring, when she and other classmates were able to visit MPS classrooms in the city.

"It was during that experience that I got to see the need for some resources," Stefano told CBS 58's Ellie Nakamoto-White. 

Now, boxes are set up inside of the dentistry school that are ready for donations.

"We're looking for backpacks, lunchboxes, markers, colored pencils, pens," Stefano said, adding that they will also accept classroom cleaning supplies. "Here at Marquette, one of our central values is community service, so we wanted to make sure that every child is going to school prepared, confident and ready to learn."

All donations will be distributed by MPS to under-resourced classrooms.

Stefano said her goal is to not only give back but to also push the importance of education for future generations.

"It makes me so happy because being a dental student, we all know that education is such an important tool for success in life," Stefano said. "We just really wanted to make sure that every child here in Milwaukee has that opportunity."

The first wave of donations is going out on Oct. 1, but they will continue accepting them through Oct. 31 and possibly beyond.
