MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- This year, homeowners across Milwaukee have received $1 million to help with critical property improvements through the Compliance Loan Program. 

The program provides eligible homeowners with zero-interest loans. The loans can be used for property repairs and address code violations. 

Mayor Cavalier Johnson talked about the importance of the program Wednesday.

"For many families in Milwaukee, the home that they live in today is really the most important investment that they ever will make in their lives," Mayor Johnson said. "And for longtime homeowners, particularly folks that are senior citizens here in our community, being able to stay safely in that home can mean staying connected to their neighborhood, connected to their family, connected to their friends, connected to their community and connected to that they call home. And that's why the city's compliance program is so important."

Mayor Johnson announced that in his 2027 budget proposal, he plans to have the program continue, with another $1 million being dedicated to it.

Since the program started in 2014, 570 homeowners have been helped, with $8.5 million.
