MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – A Milwaukee County Transit System bus driver is being recognized for bringing a 6-year-old boy to safety.
According to MCTS, Cecila Nation-Gardner was driving on May 15 near 35th and Vliet when she saw a little boy walking in traffic.
Nation-Gardner honked her horn to get other drivers’ attention, but most cars continued driving.
MCTS says she then parked her bus, ran into the street, got the boy and walked him back to her bus.
Police officers arrived and later learned the boy, who has a disability, wandered away from school. He was eventually reunited with family.
Nation-Gardner said she wouldn’t normally be at that intersection at that time.
"I ended up leaving my layover two minutes later than normal," Cecilia said afterwards. "That’s why I say I was in the right place at the right time. It was meant for me to be there. God does everything for a reason."
Nation-Gardner is a mother of three.
