MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A violent attack as people were spilling out of a celebration of life Friday evening, Aug. 23. Shots were fired into the parking lot. Now, one of those mourners is dead and two others are hospitalized.
Witnesses describe a terrifying scene, and someone was on Facebook Live right when it happened. The parking lot was packed with people. You can hear gunfire in rapid succession and see people taking cover behind cars in this busy strip mall parking lot near Teutonia and Florist. Moments before, the parking lot was filled with sounds from mourners visiting with each other at a funeral ceremony. There were also shoppers and workers from the rest of the mall going to and from their cars. The shots, police say, hit and killed a 30-year-old man and sent two others to the hospital, one in critical condition.
"Devastating, very devastating right now, I would say it's terrible and it's very discouraging to see the presence of the police like this and the markings," said Michael Hoskins who lives nearby.
CBS 58 counted nearly 50 evidence markers in groups, spread out across the parking lot. Dozens of squad cars reported to the shots fired call. We spoke with family of the man who died. They're devastated because they say someone posted video showing his last breaths and they want it taken down.
"It is time for us to come together. We need to have; they been marching for everything. When we gonna have a march to stop the violence?" said Malcolm Hunt with Least of These International Ministries who was at the scene to talk to grieving family.
The victim was identified on Monday, Aug. 26 as 30-year-old Perry Saxton of Milwaukee.
