MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 17-year-old girl was killed, and nine other young people injured, during a shooting at what officials describe as "an impromptu car party" in Dineen Park on Milwaukee's west side, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

They report the shooting taking place shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Monday, July 22.

Witnesses and investigators reported to MCSO that several dozen people, many of them being teenagers, had gathered in the park’s northside parking lot Sunday night. A verbal altercation escalated into gunfire, with at least one person calling 911.

First responders found the deceased victim and nine injured individuals, including a 19-year-old woman trampled in the aftermath of the gunfire. Eight shooting victims, including one as young as 15-years-old, are in stable condition, while one 18-year-old male is in critical condition.

"Then I noticed they were all skirting out and I said, 'Well, somebody got shot,'" Michael King said.

King lives right in front of the park and was home when the shooting took place. He tells CBS 58, that he heard all the commotion and went out on his balcony to record on his cellphone.

"They were all chaotic and screaming and hollering and fighting each other," he said. "So, I got up and opened the door and it was chaos and everybody running every which way that they can and some all in my yard and behind the house and running through the park."

MCSO also reports that two nearby homes were struck by gunfire, but no additional injuries were reported. For residents who live in the area and frequent the park, it was tough to hear the news of the shooting.

"It's close to home so it gives you that eerie feeling but just got to be alert, got to be aware," Shkeem Love said.

Love and others tell CBS 58 they would like to see the park monitored overnight to ensure it closes at 10 p.m. like the sign in front of it says it does.

"Closing that [entrance] gate or at least having more security or having the park secure itself after hours. I feel that would help. Probably some type of patrol of some sort," Love said.

Authorities are seeking suspects and a motive, and they plan to provide updates as the investigation continues.
