Mildred Fish-Harnack memorial concert to be held in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A memorial concert to celebrate the life of Mildred Fish-Harnack, a Milwaukee native known for her activism during World War II, is being organized by the Milwaukee Democratic Socialists of America along with other partners.
The event, which will take place on Friday, Sept. 1 at Turner Hall Ballroom, will feature regional musicians including Ruth B8r Ginsburg, Glutton for Insurrection, Brandon Payton-Carrillo, Lil' Guillotine and DJ Dr!psweat.
Fish-Harnack was born in Milwaukee on Sept. 16, 1902, later becoming a key figure in the fight against fascism during the rise of Adolf Hitler. She and her husband moved to Germany where they played a role in the "Red Orchestra," a network of left-wing resistance fighters.
They contributed to publishing an underground newsletter, feeding information to the U.S. and Soviet embassies and transmitting military intelligence concerning Germany's invasion of the USSR.
Arrested by the Gestapo in Sept. 1942, Fish-Harnack was executed by guillotine on Feb. 16, 1943.
According to a press release about from the Milwaukee DSA about the memorial concert noted that Fish-Harnack remains the only American known to have been executed on the direct order of Adolf Hitler.
