MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee alderman is pushing to close a loophole he says is keeping unlicensed drivers on our roads.
During a Public Safety and Health Committee meeting on Friday, May 31, the Milwaukee Police Department explained that the first time a person is caught driving without a license, they're cited, but if they don't pay that fine, their non-existent license is suspended.
The next time they are pulled over, it shows they're driving with a suspended license, they're cited again, and criminal charges are never referred to the district attorney.
Adlerman Scott Spiker says this cycle contributes to reckless driving.
"It could be this is happening all the time. It could be that the cases where somebody is killing another person is a person who never had a license and has just been ripping up suspension tickets and going on their merry way," said Ald. Spiker.
Since they were made aware of the issue, MPD says they've been working with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the DA's office to fix it.
