Milwaukee Archbishop Grob issues apology for attending private meeting at White House; claims administration 'manipulated' prayer moment

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE, (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Archbishop Jeffrey Grob has issued a statement, apologizing for taking part in an October 22 meeting at the White House with 11 other bishops.

Archbishop Grob says that he was invited in mid-September to join a group of a dozen bishops to discuss matters of importance to the Church and people, including immigration enforcement, religious worker visas, and human dignity.

The Archbishop says they were told the meeting would be a private discussion, but following the 90-minute meeting with White House domestic policy staff and advisors, they were ushered into the Oval Office and met with President Trump.

Unbeknownst to the group of bishops, Archbishop Grob says video and pictures were taken without consent.

"Permission for the public distribution or posting of either the video or photos was not given by the bishops. It did not take long thereafter for the White House to post a video and photos of the prayer."

Now after receiving messages of concern, Archbishop Grob is showing remorse for the visit, issuing this statement on Facebook:

Archbishop Grob has reiterated that the meeting was in no way an endorsement of the president, his policies, or his party.
