MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's push to pause new data centers is now on hold. 

A Common Council committee delayed a vote on the proposed moratorium Tuesday after the city attorney raised legal concerns. 

State law requires a public hearing before the pause can be approved. 

Supporters say the city needs more time to create rules addressing energy use, noise, and the impact on nearby neighborhoods. 

"We are not trying to stop innovation here," Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic said. "What we're trying to do throughout this legislation is really center people...this is the way that we can bring innovation to Milwaukee that actually fits in Milwaukee and not the other way around."

A public hearing could happen as early as next month. 

The city is still working on permanent data center regulations.
