MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- After a March with more than 20 inches of snow, many golfers in the Milwaukee area wondered how long they'd have to wait to break out their clubs.

That wait is now over as three Milwaukee County courses opened for the season today.

Officials at the Whitnall Park Golf Course said it's about as good as it gets for opening day, especially considering a week ago there was eight inches of snow on the grass.

"Today, we're starting our 2023 golf season with 12 members of the Whitnall Men's Club, fine day to be out on April 2, enjoy the weather," said Jerry Green, president of the Whitnall Men's Club.

He says this day is special, the first day back on, at least somewhat, green grass.

"We were actually trying to golf last week and the snow kind of spoiled it on us," said Greene.

"In this case, the weather was nice to us today. So, we get to come out here and play," said 16-year-old Payton Menzynski, Greene's Stepson.

Greene and the rest of the club, including his stepson, were some of the first on the list for a nearly fully booked day at Whitnall.

Payton says he's getting back on the green just in time.

"I have school tryouts actually tomorrow," said Payton, hoping to be as prepared as possible. "Just going to the course as much as possible. Go into the range. Just watching tips online, you know, just doing everything you can to just better your game."

For everyone out at the course Sunday, the best part was just being there with everyone else excited to play.

"It's one of the best feelings, you have green grass, green greens, out here swinging the clubs," said Greene.

Whitnall officials say the course will have to be a little drier before the carts can get out on it.
