Milwaukee County to invest $500,000 to revitalize two local parks
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- If parks are meant to be enjoyed by people, then county officials are hoping to do just that with a stroke of a pen. Come summertime, two of Milwaukee's County parks could have some improvements.
County Executive David Crowley signed legislation that would invest $500,000 to revitalize Tiefenthaler and Walker’s Square parks.
“At Tiefenthaler Park, you’ll find basketball courts and playgrounds, but to keep this park open it takes some renovations and funding," said Crowley. "I remember being at the waiting pool; I remember playing basketball, football in this field.”
It's a $500,000 investment Crowley says was made possible because of shared revenue and sales tax increases.
"Because of Wisconsinite 12, we had a surplus that gave us the ability to make these types of investments," said Crowley.
It takes Milwaukee’s Tiefenthaler and Walker’s Square parks and gives them some much needed TLC, including new turf, splash pads, and paint. The project is expected to begin construction during spring of this year.
“When people have a place to relax and engage with other community members, we foster a sense of belonging that contributes to the overall health and vitality of our neighborhoods," said Marcelia Nicholson, the county board chairwoman. "Every child should have the benefit; every adult should have the benefit of a healthier community, and this just puts us right there.”
Crowley grew up going to Tiefenthaler Park and says he understands its importance.
“I was in this neighborhood and so to be able to come back and not just invest in Tiefenthaler, but many other parks that have seen disinvestments over the years, it’s just a proud moment for me," said Crowley.
