Milwaukee County Zoo giraffe 'Bahatika' passes away

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County Zoo is mourning the unexpected passing of one of their giraffes.

The zoo says Bahatika (Baha) had been experiencing a variety of age-related health issues and passed away on March 22. He was 17 years old.

Born in 2005 and home to the zoo in 2006, Baha was a friendly and outgoing giraffe and was a staple at feedings. He fathered seven calves and was the first of the herd to do a voluntary blood draw.

“We will miss Baha’s friendly face and presence in our barn. His memory lives on in his many offspring," said giraffe supervisor Joan.

Three of Baha's calves remain at the zoo, Maya, Poppy and Asante.

The zoo announced Baha's sister, Rahna, is also experiencing age-related issues. Rahna is 30 years old and considered geriatric. She's being closely monitored by zoo staff.
