Milwaukee County Zoo MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County Zoo received two Eastern black rhinos as the zoo prepares to open its new $22.6 million Ladish Co. Foundation Rhino Care Center.
Female Zuri and male Kianga are in a quarantine period in their new habitat before the building opens to the public, according to zoo officials.
Zuri, 16, arrived Thursday, Oct. 23 from the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. She is described as sweet, sassy and affectionate and has given birth to two calves. Kianga, 22, traveled to Milwaukee Friday, Oct. 24 from the Racine Zoo, where he lived for 18 years. He is said to be known for blowing raspberries and is eager to please.
The rhinos have been paired at Milwaukee due to a breeding recommendation for the Eastern Black Rhino Species Survival Plan. The species is classified as critically endangered, with around 55 Eastern black rhinos living in human care across 27 North American zoos, according to a statement from the zoo.
The Rhino Care Center and Robert Dohmen Hippo Indoor Haven mark the final phase of the zoo's Adventure Africa project. The space includes an outdoor yard for rhinos, the Hippo Indoor Haven where rhinos and zebras will rotate and a new habitat for red river hogs.
