MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- On Saturday, the Milwaukee Diaper Mission hosted its fifth annual BIG Give Back event to distribute more than 40,000 diapers to families in need.

Hundreds of cars were lined up around the Hayat Pharmacy lot on Layton Ave. for hours, to receive not only diapers, but bags of food, baby formula, children's books, free vaccines and more.

"We know the need is steadily rising with the rising costs of food, gas, these basic essentials are more in need than ever before," said Meagan Johnson, the founder and executive director of the nonprofit. "One in three families used to struggle to afford diapers, now it's one in two families so 65% of families in Milwaukee County are experiencing diaper need if they have a child aged three or younger."

Their goal this year is to raise $50,000 in honor of the mission's sixth anniversary,

"We've had some pretty incredible milestones in the last couple of months, including distributing our five millionth diaper in that period of time," Johnson said. "We really need our community to rally around this work, and the more support we gain, the more we can do for our community so we have a lot of work to do in order to address the issues of our community but I think as time goes on, more people get involved, more support comes our way and then we'll be able to do more."

Officials like Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, who stopped by to help volunteer, told CBS 58 the main issue comes down to affordability.

"Raising people's salaries, that's chasing things in some respect, so we just have to be better as a country," Gov. Evers said. "We have to be open to the fact that we're going to be needing to do things like this, but we also have to make sure that people have the salaries they earn to actually buy things on their own. You can't get by with just minimum wage that's very low."
