Milwaukee leaders gather for 4th Annual Emergency Gun Violence Summit
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The fourth annual Emergency Gun Violence Summit was held in Milwaukee Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the Baird Center.
Under the theme of "We Can Prevent Gun Violence," leaders from across the state gathered to discuss the issue, including what's working, what's not, and specifically, how gun violence is impacting young people.
Just this past weekend, a 17-year-old boy was killed in a shooting near 39th and Lisbon. A 14-year-old was arrested in connection to that death.
Tuesday's keynote speaker was Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Superintendent Brenda Cassellius.
We spoke with her after the event, where she shared different methods to help reduce the lives lost to gun violence.
"Lock up our guns, change some of the gun laws around registration of guns, lost and stolen guns, making sure that we are making sure that we are making sure that those are reported," Cassellius said. "And you know they should not get in the hands of criminals who have had them."
Governor Tony Evers was given the Safer Communities Champion Award at the event in recognition of his efforts to combat gun violence during his time in office.
