MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Market Match program, a community effort aimed at promoting healthy eating among SNAP recipients, doubles the value of food stamps spent on fresh fruits and vegetables at participating markets.
Launched in August 2022, the program is a collaboration between the Fondy Food Center, UW-Extension FoodWIse and the American Heart Association. Jazmin Wong from the Fondy Farmers Market and Sue Hjelsand, senior community impact director with the AHA joined us on Tuesday, Oct. 17 to discuss the match.
The program has grown to include 11 farmers markets across Milwaukee County. Shoppers using their QUEST or EBT card at participating markets receive tokens and additional coupons for free produce up to $20 per person.
Data from 2022 shows the program served 2,649 unique households and facilitated over $109,000 in redeemed benefits, enhancing access to healthy foods for low-income families.
The program will be available through the end of October at most participating markets, with West Allis Farmers Market extending availability through November 25, which is the same day the coupons expire. Plans are in place to continue the program into 2024.
