MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee nonprofit Food for Health held a "Nutrition in the Neighborhood" event Tuesday, in an effort to bring healthy food to areas of the city described as food deserts.
Hundreds of people were able to come out to Davidson Park and take home pre-made meals.
Organizers say with the closures of several grocery stores in the city, some neighborhoods are in a nutritional crisis.
"When there is lack of food and food security, that leads to nutritional insecurity," said Kathy Koshgarian, president and CEO of Food for Health. "And personally, for me, I'm not okay with- unfortunately -fresh access to healthy food not being a basic human right."
Tuesday's event was the first of three Food for Health will be hosting this summer.
They hope to hand out 3,000 meals during the campaign, with two more events in July and August.
