MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Tuesday, Milwaukee Police Officer Dan Morrell was released from Froedtert Hospital as he continues his recovery from injuries suffered during a standoff last week.

Morrell and his wife left the hospital escorted by dozens of Milwaukee police officers who braved the conditions to show their support.

Thirty-eight-year-old Morrell and his family did not speak to the media but did thank many of the fellow officers before they were driven away.

Morrell was one of several officers who responded to a standoff one week ago near Lincoln Park.

Twenty-five-year-old Harrel Martin was barricaded in his home and keeping four children inside. At one point, he shot Morrell with a rifle. The Milwaukee Police Association (MPA) said Morrell suffered a fractured femur and a nicked artery.

After a week of treatment in the hospital, he was released Tuesday afternoon.

But the Milwaukee Police Association president said his road to recovery will be lengthy. This afternoon he read a statement from the Morrell family.

"Many citizens don't realize the sacrifices, danger, and family hardships involved in police work. But regardless of this, our officers willingly respond within minutes to any situation to assist the people they swore to protect. Many times, at their own peril," read MPA President Andrew Wagner.

The suspect, Harrel Martin, appeared in court last week. His bond was set at $1 million

He will appear in court again next Wednesday, Jan. 17.
