Milwaukee Public Museum selects indigenous artist for art installation
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Public Museum has chosen Mark Fischer, an Indigenous artist from the Oneida Nation, to create an outdoor art installation for the Future Museum. The museum announced this collaboration in a press release on Wednesday, July 31
The piece, titled "The Gathering Place," will be made primarily of copper in the shape of a dome, featuring symbolic elements that honor the cultural heritage of Wisconsin's Native American tribes.
The installation will be located in the Future Museum's Plaza, accessible year-round.
Fischer, a Germantown resident, expressed pride in crafting a meaningful artwork celebrating Native cultures. He said, "I feel a special connection to this land and am truly honored to create an iconic piece of art for this centuries-old gathering place to celebrate Native cultures, honor our natural world and create a highly interactive environment for visitors."
In the press release, MPM highlighted Fischer's dedication to cultural storytelling and environmental respect.
