Milwaukee residents march in honor of 5 years since George Floyds death

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Nearly one hundred people came together chanting for George Floyd, marching all the way to a mural paying tribute to him in the Riverwest neighborhood in Milwaukee.

Marking five years since George Floyd was murdered at the hands of former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, those rallying in Milwaukee say we should never forget.

Dozens chanting for people to say his name and other lives they say were taken by police across the nation.

The Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression who organized the march say this cause goes beyond Floyd, demanding more transparency and accountability from local law enforcement

"Even though it’s been 5 years we’re still fighting for police accountability and it’s important for us to come together and to reignite that struggle and to show that we’re not going anywhere," said Alan Chavoya with the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression.

Those gathered took a moment to pray for the lives lost.

"For all of those who have lost their loved ones," said Evan McVann, the pastor at All Peoples Gathering Church. "Lost their lives unjustly by the hands of others who claimed to uphold justice. To protect and serve when they only stole and destroyed."

Demanding justice for the victims and their families.

"It is tragic that there are so many names that we can utter today, but there are so many more that didn’t become a trending hashtag," said Angela Lang, the Executive Director for Black Leaders Organizing for Communities. "But those voices and those lives matter."

Those gathering today also demanded the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act be passed on the national level. The bill proposes holding law enforcement accountable for misconduct in court, improving transparency through data collection and reforming police training and policies.
