NOW: More cold, more ice growing on Lake Michigan

It's been a stretch! Of cold, that is. We're at 18 days and counting for temps staying below freezing. While not record breaking, it hasn't been fun.

We really hit the bottom of the barrel when our high on January 23rd only made it to two degrees. And that was just after midnight!! Most of that day was well below zero with wind chills to the -40s. Initially we weren't building a ton of ice due to windy conditions and upwelling. However, the last week we've build some solid ice. Have a look:

As you can see we are above normal on ice cover as we approach the time of year when we see peak ice on the big pond. 
Here's a look at current ice in the black and other years, courtesy of NOAA. We are in line with many years, and ice will continue to grow with a handful of days still below freezing in our forecast.

So far this meteorological winter has been colder than normal, but at least we are in the last month of it!
