MPD: Suspect injured in officer-involved shooting near Locust and Hopkins arrested, taken to hospital for treatment

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police say a 28-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday, after allegedly exchanging gunfire with detectives Tuesday evening. 

MPD officers located the suspect near 37th and Locust around 4:15 p.m. and determined that he had suffered a non-fatal gunshot injury. The suspect was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Police say it was initially believed that he was uninjured during the exchange of gunfire. 

Officials say two detectives fired shots at the man after they reported seeing him hold a gun to another person's head Tuesday evening and then point his firearm at the officers. The detectives involved are a 50-year-old man with more than 16 years of service and a 40-year-old man with more than 10 years of service. 

MPD says they will be placed on administrative duty as is routine in an officer-involved shooting. 

An investigation is ongoing.

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police say an investigation is underway after gunfire was exchanged between officers and a suspect Tuesday evening, July 9.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m., police say detectives saw an individual pointing a handgun at another person near Locust and Hopkins Street. 

MPD says the detectives confronted the armed person and identified themselves as police when the suspect and detectives exchanged gunfire. 

Police say it does not appear anyone was struck at this time. 

The armed suspect fled the scene on foot.
