MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Shots were fired outside an MPS school Monday afternoon right after students were released for the day.

One student describes a terrifying scene. Too emotional to talk on camera, she tells us she heard the shots, then ran with a lot of her peers back inside for safety as school officials ushered them into the auditorium.

Yellow police tape surrounds the area where students were waiting on their bus to take them home. Students say they heard at least five shots, then saw one young man fall over.

Milwaukee police confirm a juvenile was hit by gunfire.

The shooting happened right in front of James Madison high school, where frustrated students want the violence to end.

"Like they could've hit somebody that they don't want to. It would've been like you just hit dude, you just hit dude, and he don't have nothing to do with it, you know what I’m saying," said one James Madison high school freshman.

The block is no stranger to violence. We counted two other homes with bullet holes. A tenant in one tells us she was home when shots flew into her window last month. In addition, students say there was another shooting half a block away at 83rd and Bobolink last week.

"It's not good to do that in this type of community," said another freshman at James Madison.

"Well, all I really got to say is just that there's too many little kids and other people around here that had nothing to do with the situation."

A Milwaukee Public Schools spokeswoman says the shooting victim is not a James Madison student. She confirms school officials urged students to get back in the building, saying any time there's a perceived threat, MPS takes immediate action to try to keep kids safe.

After school activities were not affected, but 83rd St. was shut down at Florist until about 6:30 Monday evening.

We have no information on the condition of the victim at this point.
