MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- An officer with the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) is recovering after officials said he was dragged by a car trying to flee during a traffic stop.
Police said they observed "suspect illegal drugs" in a car just after 5 p.m. on Monday, June 24 near 48th and Capitol Dr.
The driver, a 33-year-old man, was ordered to get out of the vehicle but police said he instead attempted to speed away.
One officer was able to get inside of the car, but another officer, a 30-year-old man, was dragged and fell off, sustaining minor injuries.
Officials said the chase lasted about a half mile until the driver stopped by 55th and Capitol Dr. but not before hitting two other vehicles along the way.
"He jumped in the car and took off and had the door open, he’s just gone," said Deloris Hall who witnessed the incident. “Next thing you know they 'vroom' and I’m screaming, calling all my family, come look at this.”
MPD said the driver was ultimately arrested and charges are being referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office. They did not specify how long the officer was dragged for, or at what speed.
