MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police will have a new tool at their disposal during active shooter situations.
New ballistic shields were bought for the department thanks to a donation from a Minnesota-based organization to the Milwaukee Police Foundation.
While MPD already has a variety of shields in use.
These fit a specific need and use they didn't have before.
"During shooting situations where there needs to be a rescue of shorts, we need to be able to protect our men and women in the Milwaukee Police Department as best we can" said Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman. "This is a ballistic shield more than just for officers, it's for the community as well. For a rescue situation or any other situation when there's an armored subject or shots fired.
Chief Norman said that these ballistic shields are being distributed city wide -- so they can be available in all districts during all shifts.
