Hartford Fire & Rescue

HARTFORD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Hartford Fire and Rescue say multiple people jumped from a burning apartment building and had to be rescued on Saturday, October 17.

Officials say they responded to the scene on Evergreen Drive at around 12:59 a.m.

Multiple Hartford Police Officers arrived on scene to find fire pushing out the front window of an apartment unit on the first floor.

After helping occupants exit the building, two officers went to the rear of the building, finding three other occupants trapped on the second-floor balcony.

Those occupants jumped from the smoke-filled building and were caught by the officers at the rear of the building.

Fire crews were able to then extinguish the fire that had extended from the first floor to the exterior of the building, second floor, soffit and attic.

Officials say a total of 12 occupants were displaced from the 8-unit apartment building due to smoke and fire damage.

One occupant had minor injuries but refused medical transport. Two Hartford police officers were evaluated at the hospital and released shortly after for smoke related injuries.

Crews also successfully rescued 10 pets from the apartment building. No fire or EMS personnel were injured during the incident.

Red Cross is helping to assist those who were displaced with immediate needs and assuring they had shelter. A temporary
warming shelter was established in City Hall for those occupants who were in need.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
