Museum Days offers discounted admissions and more for many of Milwaukee's cultural gems
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- People have the chance to check out some of Milwaukee's cultural gems at discounted prices thanks to Museum Days, which runs from Jan. 19 through Jan. 29.
"Visitors and locals alike can take advantage of 28 different promotions from 28 different museums," Claire Koenig of VISIT Milwaukee, the organizer of the promotion, told CBS 58.
Milwaukee Museum Days evolved from what was formerly known as Museum Week before 2020. The effort not only benefits locals with discounted admissions, but also with an economic impact thanks to tourists.
"We want those folks from Chicago, from Minneapolis, from La Crosse to come in and make a whole trip of it because they spend more money, they go to more businesses beyond the museums," Koenig said.
To accomplish that, VISIT Milwaukee is pushing an ad campaign in markets outside of southeastern Wisconsin.
Among the participants is the Milwaukee County Historical Society, nestled in the heart of downtown next to Pere Marquette Park.
"We really are one of, if not the largest, depository for Milwaukee history in the state," director of collections and exhibitions Ben Barbera said in an interview.
Barbera said Museum Days come during a time of year when there's a void of activities and events around the city, making museums a great destination.
"It's a little bit of a slow time from an entertainment standpoint so it really is a good opportunity for us to encourage people to come and check out some of the venues that maybe they haven't seen," Barbera said.
Another participant is the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, located in the Harbor View neighborhood.
"We are the only bobblehead museum in the world," said Katherine Lord, the director of museum operations there. "We have a collection of well over 10,000 bobbleheads."
Lord added the promotion of Milwaukee Museum Days not only benefits larger, more well-known museums, but smaller, lesser-known ones as well.
"Museum Days is really nice because we get the backing of an organization like VISIT Milwaukee," Lord said.
