Navy Week sails into Milwaukee with more than 70 events across the city
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Last week you saw Harley-Davidson riders everywhere you turned in Milwaukee. Now, it's time for Milwaukee to set sail as sailors take over the city for Navy Week.
Milwaukee will embark on Navy Week beginning July 17 with more than 70 events taking place throughout the city. Navy week is aimed at engaging the community with the nation's maritime service branch of the armed forces.
"Milwaukee has a rich Naval history along with the state of Wisconsin itself, " said Anthony Falvo the director of the Navy Office of Community Outreach. "We've had more than 30 ships named after the state of Wisconsin or cities, places or people in Wisconsin; and we've had five ships named after Milwaukee to include the newest LCS (littoral combat ship), the USS Milwaukee."
Every year, the Navy brings the event to just 15 cities across the US. This will be Milwaukee's fifth time hosting Navy Week. It's a chance for some sailors to come back to the place they're from.
"You'll have a lot of Milwaukee hometown sailors that are coming back from the fleet to celebrate Navy Week here," said Falvo.
Others will come to Milwaukee for the first time and bringing with them some connection to the city. Here is a full list of events happening this week-- from volunteer to demonstrations and performances.
"This all culminates at this weekend's performance by the Blue Angles at the Milwaukee Air and Water Show," said Falvo.
The Milwaukee Air and Water Show takes place Saturday, July 22 and Sunday, July 23.
